At oxford university from 1942 until 1954....

there was a student club that met to provide a forum for discussion and to follow the practice of Socrates to "follow the argument wherever it led them." During the existence of the club, many of the most prestigious and notable figures at Oxford and Cambridge spoke, debated, and presented papers. Among them were G.E.M. AnscombeAntony FlewIris MurdochAustin FarrerA.J. AyerD.M. MacKinnonC.E.M. JoadE.L. MascallGabriel MarcelFrederick CoplestonI.M. CrombieBasil MitchellR.M. HareMichael PolanyiGilbert RyleJ.L. Our goal with the L&H Socratic Club is to provide a modern day opportunity for people to once again engage and ask questions and follow a healthy debate wherever it may take them. We invite people from all walks of life, industries, professions, beliefs, and ideologies to participate and respectfully engage with those who have opposing points of view or beliefs in a safe, fun, invigorating, and healthy environment.
